“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Several weeks ago, our family got to go to the Titanic museum close to Gatlinburg. (They have a really neat grand piano!) It was cool to see the history of the place and yet very sad to see some of the people’s stories. There were stories of kids on the boat and then of the richest couple on the boat. There was one lady in particular that sticks out in my mind. She was hesitant to go on the Titanic. People said that she shouldn’t be scared- the ship was said to be ‘unsinkable.’ She replied by saying that that was why she was hesitant to get on the boat- they had taken the Titanic out of God’s hands.
As many of you probably know, the ship hit an iceberg and sank. The Titanic was the Tower of Babel for that day. It was the best ship of its time. It had a swimming pool, and they even had bathtubs for the richer people to use! (They only changed the water out for the poorer people after ten had used it..tTalk about wanting to go first! ☺) How many times do we try to take life into our own hands and build our little “towers of babel?” When I was little, I remember thinking that I didn’t have any idols in my life. I would picture our mantel in the living room and nod my head thinking, “There aren’t any little carvings up there. Nope. I’m good.” Then I found out later that idols are much more than little carvings! Deuteronomy 5:6-7 says, “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.” Okay…maybe I’m not so good. There are so many times when life is going great and I feel like I can handle anything. I start putting family and friends before my Bible time or I get so busy and wrapped up with school and life that I skip my time with God. We need to humble ourselves before God, the One Who can handle anything, and recognize that we can’t manage things without Him. Lay down your idols- the TV, your phone, money, or even a favorite pastime.
The next time you are tempted to put something before spending time with God, think twice. Pass up the other option. We need to recognize our idols and lay them down before we hit Satan’s iceberg and sink.
