“For I am the Lord, I do not change;” –Malachi 3:6a
Have you ever felt like everything around you is changing and you really don’t know what to do about it? There are definitely times when I feel like life is a big whirlwind and that I’m getting pretty dizzy in it. I have found that there is only one thing that is really stable and never changes – God. Isn’t it amazing how, after everything that has happened from the beginning of this world, God stays the same? Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” There are times when I put a really high value on earthly things, and now I am realizing that everything on this earth is of no eternal value. I have found out the hard way that “things” aren’t going to give you peace. People won’t give you lasting peace either! But through finding out the hard way, I have found the greatest peace! Jesus is that firm foundation through the whirlwind of life that allows you to stand when everything else around you is shaky.
I have been doing a Bible study called “Experiencing God” by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King. One of the day’s study showed how different people in the Bible experienced God and named Him based off of their experience. Then, it had a list of some of the names of God and Scripture references for them. For example: “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.’ So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace.” (Judges 6:23-24a) Gideon experienced God as the One who gave him peace in the midst of a trying time. The instructions in the study were to circle some of the names of God based on how I’ve experienced Him. One of the names of God was “Our Refuge and Strength“. In a world where everything is falling apart, there is a God who stays together. In a time where everything around me is changing, there is a God who never, ever changes. In a world where no one is strong, there is a God who is powerful. In the darkness of this world, there is a God who holds a light that never burns out. In times when we feel like we can’t go on, there is a God who gives us strength. In a world that is full of so called “happiness,” there is a God who provides us with everlasting joy. In a world that seems to suck the life out of you, there is a God who fills you up. Thank you, Jesus!
So when everything around you seems to be changing and you don’t feel like you know how to handle it, turn to the ‘Father of lights, with whom there is no variation and shadow of turning.’ (James 1:17) He will guide you and give you peace in a world of unrest.
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.” (Ephesians 2:13,14)
