Overwhelmed

“Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing towards the sons of men.”

Psalm 66:5

A few weeks ago, my friend and I were talking about God’s goodness. When we took the time to realize everything that He’s done for us, we understood how amazing it is that an all-powerful God loves us and has done so much for us. The song Overwhelmed by Big Daddy Weave is one of my favorite songs because it gives a perfect example of how we feel when we see how awesome our God is.

The first verse says:

“I see the work of Your hands

Galaxies spin in a heavenly dance, oh God

All that You are is so overwhelming.”

Our God is a powerful God. He spoke this whole world into existence in only six days (and rested on the 7th). Psalm 97:5-6 says, “The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory.” God is so powerful that even the strongest mountains melt like wax before Him!

The second verse says:

And I hear the sound of Your voice

All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise, oh God

All that You are is so overwhelming.

God’s words are gentle yet powerful. They can quiet our fears and pierce through the hardest heart: “For the word of God is alive. Sharper than any two edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow…” -Hebrews 4:12. They are full of love and authority: “For the word of the Lord is right and true; He is faithful in all He does.” Psalm 33:4. His words are what we stand on for strength and comfort: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24.

The last verse says:

I know the power of Your cross

Forgiven and free forever you’ll be my God

And all that You’ve done is so overwhelming”

God has given us so much. Our human minds can’t even wrap around the thought of everything He’s done for us. He bore the punishment for every sin we have ever made and ever will make so we would be freed from our bondage of sin and death. He lived His life as the most humble of servants. Philippians 2:8 says, “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

And now my favorite part of the song, the chorus:

“I delight myself in You

In the glory of Your presence

I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

God, I run into Your arms

Unashamed because of mercy

I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You.”

Because of the sacrifice God made for us, we no longer have to be ashamed to come before Him. Some people feel like they have to become a “good person” before they accept Jesus into their lives, but that is not what Jesus asks of us. He wants us to come as we are. He covers up all our sins with His grace and makes us a new creation in Him. Every single Christian is living proof that God’s grace is for the worst of sinners and can cover up any sin. Without His amazing grace, we would have no hope of ever having eternal life with Him.

Our God is truly an amazing God. We should never take for granted all that He has given us, but instead come into His presence overwhelmed by who He is and what He’s done for us.

In Christ,

Callie
