Hello! This is another guest post, this time done by one of our good friends, Lillie. We hope it is encouraging to you!
I have been struggling so much recently. I definitely had been putting movies before God…like an ‘idol’. I did not want that. I felt empty and I knew it wasn’t right. One thing that really hit me was Philipians 4:8.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
I have been pondering over this verse for some time. I love the Marvel movies and LotR and the Hobbit!! They are awesome!! And I’m not gonna lie, I was definitely OBSESSED. But are they true, honorable, just, lovely, commendable, excellent, or worthy of praise?? They do not fit Philipians 4:8. I knew it. I just didn’t want to accept it.
But finally my eyes were opened. The sermon at church was about ‘walking differently’. It was then I realized that if I was watching those movies that are filled with violence and bad language, I was no different that the rest of the the world. As a Christian, I am called to walk as a light.
“…for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8 ESV)
I was once in darkness, but now I am in the Light of the Lord. When I dressed up as Black Widow, I also realized that I was dressing up as a woman who was not necessarily modest, and who used the Lord’s name in vain and just in general was not a Christian. At first I thought it was no big deal- ‘I wasn’t like that, so it’s fine.’ But no…no. I am a LIGHT! I need to WALK DIFFERENTLY than the world. How will the world know that I am different if I am doing everything they are doing?
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)
“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” (Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV)
Pretty much all the Marvel movies have all six things the Lord hates in them. It was a deal breaker for me. I have chosen to refocus myself on Christ, because I felt as if I was being consumed by worldly things. I am aligning myself back with God, rather than entertainment. As a family, we have chosen to cease watching those movies. It was sad for me, but I was also relieved and I feel much closer to God.
“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39 ESV)
I hope I could encourage you!
