“For the LORD does not see as a man sees; for the man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:17
Your heart is one of the most important parts of your body physically and spiritually. In the physical sense, it pumps blood through you so all the parts of your body can function. In the spiritual sense, it holds the Holy Spirit, making you alive in Christ. Proverbs 27:19 says, “As in water a face reflects face, so a man’s heart reveals the man.” This means that it not only holds the Holy Spirit, but also reflects our motives and actions. So, to be able to serve God on the outside, we must first learn to serve Him in our heart.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in trying to look like amazing Christians on the outside that we forget to look and see if we are really serving God in our heart. Even though it is still important to make sure we are acting in a Christ-like way, we still need to make sure that we don’t get so worried about how we appear on the outside that we forget to also look at our heart.
Our heat is much like the roots of a tree. If we have a bad and corrupt heart, we will bear bad fruit. If we have a good and strong heart, grounded in the Lord, we will bear good fruit. So really, serving God in our heart must come before serving Him on the outside. We must serve Him from the inside out.
