Sin is the greatest problem mankind has ever faced. It causes all of the pain, death, and sadness on earth. Laws and regulations have been made to prevent people from sinning, but they have only shown us what horrible sinners we are and how incapable we are of having victory over sin and death. Thankfully, we have an amazing Savior who created the solution to the problem of sin and made the solution available as a free gift to all people! Through Him alone we can defeat the power of sin and death over mankind and live with peace and assurance of true happiness.
When Adam sinned, pain and death entered our world, and we were cursed to toil and die as a consequence for our sin. Because of our sin, we cannot be in the presence of God. God loved us, though, so he provided a way for man’s sin to be “covered” by sacrificing a spotless lamb every year to take the punishment man deserved. In this way, a priest could enter into God’s presence and commune with Him for the people even though we had sinned. This system worked, but it was nothing like what Adam and Eve experienced in the Garden of Eden when they were free of sin and guilt. This system of sacrifices only covered sin- it didn’t take it away and make you free from its power over your life. Because sin wasn’t actually gone but simply hidden, only the high priest could enter once a year into God’s presence. The average person could never be in a close fellowship with God again because of their sin, or so it seemed. God had a better plan in mind, but to put it into action, He first wanted to show men how incapable they were of saving themselves.
The way to show people how sinful they were was to give them a list of laws they must follow to the letter to be perfect. This revealed to men how utterly unable they were to save themselves. Romans 5:20-21 says, “Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” God allowed men to struggle at keeping the law so that grace would abound much more. In other words, people appreciate and earnestly desire grace much more when they realize the depths of their sin and the punishment they rightly deserve. When God instituted the Mosaic Covenant and the Ten Commandments, it was evident that no one could keep them perfectly. Of course, there were people like the Pharisees that earnestly tried to follow the letter of the law, but it just wasn’t possible! Galatians 3:25 says, “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.” God created the law so that we would realize what an amazing gift grace was and be led to his final plan of salvation.
This final plan was that God would send His perfect son to die in our place. Jesus took the punishment we deserved when he died on the cross! In the past, man’s sin was only “covered” by sacrificing an innocent lamb, but now, because of the death of God’s innocent and perfect son, our sins are completely wiped away! 1 John 1:9-2:2 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” Jesus is our advocate with the Father. When God looks at us on Judgment Day, He will see only Christ’s blood if we believe on His name. Jesus took on your punishment so God can now allow you to enter into His kingdom. Also, now that we are without sin, God’s own Son can abide in us, and we are no longer in need of a priest to intercede for us! We can talk directly to God himself!
God’s ways are always better than our ways. Since the beginning of creation God has planned our salvation. Through our sin and the law, God showed us how much we need Him. Then He provided the perfect substitute for our sins and adopted us as His own children. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is the one and only solution to sin.
