“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.“
Guess what? You can’t serve earthly possessions and the Lord at the same time! It’s either one or the other.
Now, this doesn’t mean that you when serve God you don’t have any money or things. Rather, it is “letting go” and surrendering completely to Him no matter what happens or comes up instead of having your eyes focused on the treasures of the world. There is so much freedom that comes from being fixed on Christ because instead of being focused on this world, we put it all on Christ and trust Him with the rest.
This is one of those things that sounds nice when it’s easy but becomes a lot harder to swallow when the going gets rough. How easy is it to naturally have our focus switched to the things of this world? But we are called to so much more as Christians! We are called to store up treasure in heaven. The things of this world will go away anyway! In the words of Elsa from Frozen (yes, I did just say that), “Let it go!”
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” -Matthew 6:20-21
Mark 8:36 says that all the gain in this world accomplishes nothing if we lose our soul.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” -Hebrews 12:1
