How To: Watch TV

I’ll be the first to admit- I love a good show on TV. There are few things better than just sitting back after a busy day and watching The Andy Griffith Show with the rest of my family. I mean, the slapstick humor and the good moral lessons in there make this show one of my favorites. Soccer is another personal favorite of mine. I enjoy the intricacy of the game and the amazing skill it takes to make a leather ball do what you want it do against a team of 11 other men. Now, unless it’s the World Cup or something, I rarely sit down and watch a whole game. It’s too much of a time suck. Instead, I will usually watch a half or 30 minutes. But you get my point.

Outside of live soccer, I’ve concluded that most of the shows worth watching were made long before my time. We’re talking in the ’60s, ’50s, and maybe even ’40s. Why? Well, when you think about it, the world has gotten a lot worse in the last 50-70 years. The standards we have now are so much lower than those that were around when these shows were produced. In the older shows, you see “married” couples sleeping in different beds. You find that people are fully and modestly clothed. In the shows I’ve seen, there is absolutely no cursing or taking God’s name in vain. What do you see and hear in today’s shows? People in their underwear taking God’s name in vain!

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” -Philippians 4:8

Back to our filter, Philippians 4:8. Do the shows that you are watching reflect Biblical principles? Do they take God’s name in vain? Do they bring your mind to places they shouldn’t be? If so, DON’T WATCH THOSE SHOWS. It’s not honoring to God, and it’s not honoring to the calling that on your life as a child of God.

Now don’t get worried: I can assure you that there are options out there. Personally, I enjoy Dick Van @#!*% , The Andy Griffith Show, and Bonanza. Classic TV. Why? Because: most of these old shows reinforce belief in God, there is ingenious humor splattered throughout these shows, they are clean from vulgarity, and uphold many Biblical principles. The good news is that many of these can be found on YouTube or Roku channels. Give them a chance. They are so much better than the other junk out there.

Honor God with every aspect of life. I’ve been going through a Bible study recently, and the question proposed is this: Are you a fan or a follower? Give God everything.
